Let's Edit that Closet

Updated: Nov 11, 2022

Did you get a bunch of new stuff? How about a few gift cards that are burning a hole in your pocket? Maybe it’s time to do a little decluttering in the old closet and set yourself up for success as we head into 2022!!

I have this rule that I use when I am adding new items into my closet: every time I get one new item, I have to get rid of THREE! Maybe that sounds extreme and you aren’t quite ready to be so dramatic with your decluttering, but even if you do one for one, you’ll find you don’t have a closet that’s bursting at the seams. When your closet is exploding with tons of “stuff” it can be completely overwhelming to get dressed each day. So, this week, I am sharing my top tips for digging into that task. It’s a step by step process to edit that closet that anyone CAN do ;)

Here are 5 quick steps to a cleaner, more organized closet:

1. Make 3 piles: Keep, Try on, Donate

Keep the things you know fit and that you actually wear. Try on items you're unsure about. Donate the items you haven't worn in a month or more.

2. Organize by color

I know not everyone is as OCD as I am, BUT doing this will allow you to see how much you have of each color. You may notice you have a LOT of one and very few others. Where do you need to scale back? Where could you use a boost?

3. Get matching hangers

This again may sound like the ravings of a crazy person, but I promise it makes getting dressed easier. When the hangers are all different it can be distracting and make it harder to get clarity around your look for the day.

4. Get a system for organizing your shoes so you can SEE all of them

I have a rack and a rolling cart for sandals. I organize the rack by season so the out of season items aren't visible. That way I can see exactly what my options are when I am getting dressed. Same rule applies for shoes, if you haven't worn them yet this season, say goodbye.

5. Time to SHOP

You likely noticed some gaps in your wardrobe. Time to go shopping!

Did you just think to yourself, UH-OH, I have no idea what I need! You’re in the right place. Not only do I have my Winter Capsule dropping in a few short weeks, I’m going to start sharing sneak peaks with you that may help give you some guidance as you head out to spend some of your holiday gift cards!
