Building a Lasting Wardrobe!

I’m not your typical fashion blogger. I don’t get my nails done every week. I don’t spray or self tan during the winter. I don’t drink 3 iced coffees a day. I don’t wear tons of makeup. I don’t drink coke and hit Chick-fil-A multiple times a week. And I definitely don’t get a full new wardrobe every season.

Don’t get me wrong. If this is your jam, it brings you JOY, doesn’t blow up your bank account, and most Importantly makes you FEEL good inside and out, I’m all for it. I’m just probably not your gal.

I believe in capsule wardrobes, with classic pieces that serve you year after year. I believe in spending your time and money on things that are going to serve you for the long haul, including the food/drinks/ thoughts you put in your body. I believe we can feel like our best, most confident selves when we choose our wardrobes wisely, and fuel or bodies and minds intentionally.

How to decide what pieces to invest in:

You may be wondering, what should I have in my wardrobe as a foundation? These are the must have pieces in my opinion. They will allow you plenty of versatility, don’t go out of style every year, and your cost per wear will be very low. If that concept is new to you, it basically just breaks down how much you actually spend each time you wear a piece of clothing. The more you wear it, the less it “costs.” It’s why splurging on a pair of really great jeans or boots makes sense in the long haul. If you are going to be wearing them on repeat, the cost per wear over time just keeps going down. On the flip side of that coin, when you buy a trendy piece, you may only wear it twice. While it may have been a deal, the cost per wear ends up being much higher.

Here’s an example:

Jeans $100, but you wear them 3 times a week for about 30 weeks of the year. The cost per wear is a little over a dollar!

Sequin top for NYE $40. You wear it once, maybe twice, cost per wear, $20.

Let's Get Building:

Without further adieu, here are the items for a solid closet foundation for the cooler months:

  • 2 pair of jeans (whatever style/cut you like best) One pair should be a darker wash, one lighter. Preferably, one should be without distressing

  • One pair of black joggers

  • One pair of black leggings that could be dressed up

  • 5 Casual tops (Tshirts, Sweatshirts, button downs - think pull on and go, but could be worn to work when accessorized correctly)

  • 3-5 Dressier tops (can be worn to work, date nights, happy hour, other social functions)

  • 2-3 Sweaters

  • Classic LBD

  • Booties

  • Flats or mules
